A strong candidate must be an enthusiastic, energetic, and collegial individual who wants to work with high school students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting. The de Toledo English Department’s mission is to expose students to a wide variety of texts in an effort to promote close reading and critical thinking, and to foster an understanding of the moves writers make to create meaning. To that end, the candidate will facilitate deep inquiry and support students in seeking answers; nurture an appreciation for literature's ability to imbue a deeper understanding of the human experience; strive to expose students to impactful writing from around the world to help them develop a broad cultural literacy; aim to produce college-ready writers and speakers, confident of their clarity, purpose, and voice, in hopes that they may advocate for themselves and others.
Teach four classes in the English Department
Demonstrate an overall knowledge of one's discipline(s) to build curriculum in order to reach students’ diverse ability levels and learning styles.
Develop curricula and activities to meet academic standards, and design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards.
Participate in ongoing reflection of lessons, evaluations, curricula, course content, and course materials.
Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
Communicate expectations, criteria for assessment, student progress, and student strengths/weaknesses to parents/guardians and students.
Demonstrate high standards of professionalism.
Embody the characteristics that the school wishes the students to uphold, especially but not limited to respect, excellence, authenticity, curiosity, hard work, and professionalism.
Develop in students the skills, interests, and abilities necessary to be lifelong learners and engaged civic participants.
Be flexible, motivated, confident, professional, and eager to evolve as an educator and to work in a highly collaborative environment.
Participate in community events and contribute to the school culture.
Participate in grade-level activities and school-wide functions.
Bachelor’s in English or related field; Master’s in English or related field; or M. Ed. with BA in English (or related field) preferred.
Minimum three years of experience teaching English to grades 9-12.
Deep knowledge of: English grammatical concepts, the recursive writing process, different genres of student writing, canonical literature, and contemporary and post-colonial literature.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Ability to work collaboratively with a grade-level team within the department to develop grade-level curriculum that is consistent and coordinated across the four-year English curriculum.
