Saint Mary’s Hall seeks an outstanding Middle School English Teacher to be a part of a successful English Vertical Team K-12, teaching a course in grammar, writing, and literature. This position also includes the role of being an advisor to 10-12 seventh grade students.

Course Description: The goal of Form 7 English is to help students become (1) critical readers who can recognize cause and effect relationships in literature and (2) expressive writers who can write effectively about those relationships in literature and life. To facilitate this learning, this course utilizes a variety of literature, both fiction and non-fiction, connected by the overall conceptual theme of Relationships: societal roles and responsibilities, cultural views and philosophies, survival, justice, adventure, and the strength and character of the human spirit. Students continue to develop their understanding of the significance of narrative elements, literary devices, sentence structure, paragraph structure, essay structure, and reading strategies in both reading and writing assignments. A variety of assessments are used to determine each student’s level of proficiency and achievement in light of these concepts and skills. The incorporation of all aspects of the writing process, as well as extensive instructional practice in grammar, sentence structures, and paragraphing, is designed to move students along a continuum of more sophisticated writing skills. The program combines selected works of fiction and non-fiction used both as literary achievements and as models for the student’s writing coupled with a stress on basic grammar and punctuation skills. Regular writing assignments develop the students’ command of various modes and methods of writing. The following key concepts are emphasized: prewriting strategies, writing processes, audience awareness, idea development, topic sentence, and paragraph development, use of concrete details, organizational strategies, revising strategies, voice, diction, syntax, and language conventions. Students practice these concepts in various assignments that include descriptive-narrative writing; journals; compare-contrast, cause-effect, and persuasive reasoning essays; imitation exercises; and other writings that help them gain experience in distinguishing showing from telling.
Teach up to five sections of English
Serve as an Advisor to a small group of Middle School students to oversee those students’ academic progress and to facilitate communication with their parents
Assume any faculty duties as assigned by MS Division Head, including coaching, club, and/or leadership group sponsor
Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, staff, and administration
Work in Form Level team planning to facilitate horizontal lesson implementation and Form Level activities, such as field trips and experiential education
Support the efforts of vertical team planning and curriculum alignment
Participate in meetings of the English Vertical Team, Middle School English Department, and Middle School Division
Participate in professional development activities
A. in English, advanced degree(s) preferred
A minimum of three years of teaching at the secondary school level is required
Secondary teaching certification or graduate work in English/education preferred
Successful teaching experience in middle school preferred
Passion for the subject matter and for working with bright, motivated middle school students in a rigorous, college-preparatory environment
The ability to implement technology into daily teaching and the design of student projects is preferred
Strong background and professional development experience in teaching English is preferred
Vertical team experience preferred
Previous experience with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion curriculum (preferred)
Strong preference to those who coach sports and other co-curriculars
Student-centered, collaborative, and transparent educator who is accessible to students, parents, and colleagues and is adept at building relationships
Academic leader with extraordinarily high expectations of her/himself and the ability to inspire and motivate others

He served previously at some of our nation’s top schools, including The Hill School, The Lawrenceville School, and The Shipley School.
