The Valley School is a co-educational elementary school, serving students in grades pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. Founded in 1985, The Valley School offers a high-quality academic foundation in a small school setting, rich with opportunities for creativity, exploration, and play. We celebrate childhood. Our learning program is a mixture of playful work and purposeful play and is designed to be developmentally appropriate at each grade. Social emotional learning and skill development form an important pillar of our program, in addition to academics, specialist classes, and dynamic playground spaces designed to offer myriad opportunities for students to learn and grow.

Assistant Teachers serve an important role at The Valley School. Assistant Teachers are placed in classrooms with students in grades pre-k through 5th grade. Assistant Teachers support Lead Classroom Teachers and are also responsible for teaching some specific components of our curriculum. Successful Assistant Teachers take direction well and can also lead a class. They are team players, possess strong communication skills, and are creative and flexible. This position reports to the Head of School.
Essential Functions of Assistant Teacher
Contribute actively and thoughtfully to all learning activities in classrooms and on playgrounds
Possess a genuine appreciation and concern for the education and development of children
Provide collaborative and consistent support to lead teachers
Help plan and provide a wide range of activities in the classroom designed to reach a variety of learning styles
Maintain developmentally appropriate practices and possess strong classroom management skills
Nurture kind and respectful relationships with children
Clearly communicate student and instructional needs with faculty and administration
Maintain confidentiality and nurture healthy relationships with families
Assist Lead Teachers with student assessments, provide feedback, and help document growth and progress; participate in parent teacher conferences
Help maintain an inviting, safe, and organized classroom
Safely transition students between specialist classes and classrooms; accompany students to specialist classes
Reflect on personal practice and feedback to continually improve teaching, the goals of the school, and children's educational experiences
Participate in all required faculty meetings, committee work, school events, and weekly duties, including recess and lunches

Successful teaching experience in elementary grades
Bachelor’s Degree required; Washington State teaching certificate preferred
