Virginia Beach Friends School in Virginia Beach, VA seeks experienced full-time Music Specialists for grades toddler through 8th-grade. VBFS is a small (160 students and growing) independent school in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach.
The VBFS Music Specialists works with students as young as 2.5 years to 8th-grade students. The Music Specialist is responsible for creating a classroom environment that supports the development of students’ appreciation, love, and understanding of music. The teacher exposes students to a wide variety of instruments, experiments with vocal expression at the individual and group level, investigates musical theory at age-appropriate levels, and promotes learning through experiential learning with the ultimate goal of instilling a life-long passion for music in all Friends students.
Teach toddler through 8th-grade music classes in an engaging, developmentally appropriate way.
Teach steel pans for grades 3rd through 8th including maintaining one or more performance ensembles
Create an inclusive classroom environment and develop meaningful relationships with all students.
Support students in social-emotional and academic development by communicating with classroom teachers on a regular basis.
Develop and support a flexible curriculum that provides a balanced approach to all areas of music education.
Adjust and adapt curriculum based on a student’s needs.
Write student assessments multiple times throughout the academic year.
Plan, rehearse, and direct students in annual school performance (Grandfriends Day, Winter and Spring Concerts, outside Pan competitions), graduation performance.
Work in collaboration with other Specialist Teachers to support student needs and promote cross-curriculum collaboration when possible.
Participate in other school-related activities throughout the year.

Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Music, Music Education, or equivalent; Master’s preferred, and 3 to 5 years of music teaching experience at a minimum.
