St. Mary’s Ryken seeks a Science teacher for students in grades 9-12 specifically for Physics courses. This is a full-time teaching position. As a 1:1 iPad School, the Science department has the ability to not only perform physical lab techniques, but also simulate labs as well. Having the ability to perform simulations gives students the necessary practice to ensure mastery of the material. SMR offers exciting STEM pathways including Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science. Along with academically driven students, these offerings help make the SMR Science Department a rewarding and enriching place to call home.
Our Administration is genuinely supportive of the science curriculum. The new STEM lab, along with the recent addition of the Project Lead the Way Program, demonstrates the on-going commitment to science education.
There are no district-driven lesson plans, tests, and rubrics. Instead, teachers have the flexibility to plan a course that meets the needs of the students in the class and they have the independence to incorporate their own teaching style. The Science department has many curriculum resources for our teachers and we work as a collaborative team to support each other.
A Master’s degree in Science or Math, or in Science or Math instruction is preferred but not required.
Experience teaching Physics or a Physics background is strongly preferred, but we will also give strong consideration to candidates with experience teaching Math or with a Math background.
Likewise, teaching experience in the area of Science is preferred but other experiences and educational qualifications will be considered. At a minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in the expected content area is required of all SMR teachers.
Of utmost importance is the ability to establish a rigorous yet engaging classroom atmosphere with the expectation that all students are being prepared for continued study after high school.
Technology skills that correlate to teaching in a 1:1 environment are highly valued; however, training is available for teachers who bring other strengths and experiences to the position but may not yet have had the opportunity to build a repertoire of technology-integration skills.
Other valuable attributes include, but are not limited to: strong organizational and interpersonal skills; knowledge of current trends in national Science standards; proven ability in critical thinking, analysis and writing instruction.
Maryland teacher certification (or the ability to attain certification in three years) is highly encouraged
