The position of principal of Northport High School requires a strong, collaborative leader with extensive knowledge of best practices in curriculum, instruction and assessment, social emotional learning, civic responsibility, and proactive and restorative approaches to student issues. The principal and four assistant principals work collaboratively with departmental chairpersons and directors to provide supervision, guidance, support and direction to the outstanding faculty and staff in order to create an optimal learning environment for all students. The principal, as a role model for faculty, staff and students will work collegially with administration, faculty and staff to support the District’s strategic plan which encompasses the District’s mission, vision and core values and beliefs. Inclusivity is a guiding principle that continues to serve as the foundation for all students to be celebrated and to be shepherded to success.
The principal will establish mutually respectful relationships with all stakeholders in the high school and the community at large for the betterment of the student population. Excellent communication skills are required along with a commitment to working side by side with parents and guardians to support students in their personal, academic, social and emotional growth and development.
The principal must have extensive knowledge of current New York State Learning Standards and Assessments as well as a working knowledge of both Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programs.
The principal must be able to support all areas of academic study as well as both co-curricular and extra-curricular programs offered to students in grades 9-12.
High school teaching experience is required as is administrative experience at the secondary level.
The principal must demonstrate a record of solid leadership, supervision, and evaluation of faculty and staff.
The principal must be collegial, collaborative, and highly committed to student success.
The principal must possess excellent communication skills and have a desire to establish mutually respectful relationships with faculty, staff and parents.
The principal must establish and maintain a professional learning community by working with other administrators, faculty and staff to promote a learning environment where all students can thrive and meet with success.
The principal must possess New York Certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) or in School Administration and Supervision (SAS).
