In an authentically diverse community reflective of Los Angeles, New Roads prepares young people for life by developing in them a personal dedication to learning, a respect for independent thinking, an expanding curiosity about the world and its people, and a commitment to the common good.
New Roads’ Human Development Program rests at the center of the school’s mission. A focal point of the curriculum is rooted in the ways of Council, a practice which draws upon the art of storytelling, and listening to one another from the heart. Council practice is coupled with didactic teaching on subject matter that enhances students’ empathy for others, one’s emotional intelligence, and mindfulness. One goal of a New Roads Human Development teacher is to support and enhance the social-emotional learning environment school-wide.
The Human Development teacher reports to the Upper School Director and works closely with the Upper School Counselor and Human Development Chair.
