Upper School Music Teacher Full Time Beginning Late August 2021
Position: Upper School Music Teacher Reports to: Upper School Division Head FLSA: Exempt, full-time
Teach performing arts foundations classes to grades 8 and 9
Teach music theory and chorus to grades 9,10,11 and 12
Prepare students for annual Christmas and spring concerts
Attendance at some evening and weekend events
Provide some administrative support with the instrumental program
Provide academic support for students outside of class time (answering homework questions, consulting with them, as needed
Attend department and faculty meetings
Support the students and division by covering study halls, lunch duties and other assignments, as needed
Other school duties as required as a member of the upper school community
Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and schedules including remote learning
Requirements & Qualifications:
Passion for music education and for girls education.
Bachelor’s degree in music education, music performance, or music. Advanced degree preferred.
At least 3 years experience teaching and directing choral ensembles, with a wide knowledge of diverse choral repertoire and resources. Experience with instrumental music is preferred.
A breadth of comprehension pertaining to music of western and non-western cultures.
Strong accompaniment and conducting skills.
Commitment to using innovative teaching practices and technology to enhance instruction
Knowledge of, appreciation for, and demonstrated commitment to anti-racist, anti-bias education, multicultural teaching, and culturally responsive pedagogy
Proficient with current educational technology, especially blended learning platforms and strategies.
Enthusiasm for working with adolescent learners
Excellent communications skills, creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work well within a collaborative environment.
Willingness to work with colleagues to evaluate, design, and implement Music curricula in the Upper School.
Commitment to curriculum and instruction that demonstrates cultural competency
Positive team player with a desire to contribute and share your gifts and talents with the students and administration of the school
Familiarity with NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals.
Proficiency in the use of classroom technology: interactive Smart Boards, learning management systems, Google, and more.
Experience with music technology and musical equipment.
