The Hockaday School is seeking an experienced and innovative Upper School History and Debate teacher beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.
History at Hockaday:
The History Department at The Hockaday School encourages students to understand the world around them from multiple perspectives. History teachers develop and execute engaging lesson plans creating an environment which allows students to think critically and independently. The faculty teaches students to use historical details to fashion their own understanding of the past, the present, and the future. With the prominence of inquiry, research, writing, discussion, and analysis in the curriculum, the History Department strives to cultivate students who think for themselves and outside themselves in addressing essential questions.
Debate at Hockaday:
The Hockaday School Debate program has a strong tradition and has historically earned top ratings and been highly visible at the national level. The successful candidate will work to support students in becoming life-long, persuasive communicators with highly developed skills in listening, argumentation, analysis, and oral delivery. The ideal candidate will have experience debating or coaching debate with the primary focus of Worlds School Debate; be willing to travel to local, regional, and national competitions on weekends throughout the year; and have experience coaching and mentoring students while building their confidence and expertise. He/she will be dedicated to and enjoy working with students in and out of the debate classroom.
Experience debating or coaching debate with the primary focus of Worlds School Debate
A willingness to travel to local, regional, and national debate competitions, which occur on weekends
Experience and interest in developing innovative uses of technology in the classroom as well as comfort with its administrative use
Must successfully complete background screening and verification
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate
Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances
Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time
Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 30lbs. across the campus/classroom/office
Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts with stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
Ability to periodically work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events as needed
