The Assistant Dean of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) will guide school-wide efforts to support the work of equity and inclusion for all members of the Ed&IS community. Under the Direction of the Wasserman Dean and the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) the Assistant Dean of EDI will serve as a strategic advisor to Ed&IS academic and staff leadership, and provide guidance on all matters, programs and initiatives related to the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategies to bring about, nurture and sustain EDI in all aspects of ED&IS's work. This individual will work collaboratively with the Wasserman Dean and Associate Dean for EDI to create a framework for Ed&IS's EDI pedagogical and programmatic efforts and initiatives. The Assistant Dean of EDI will work on issues and initiatives related to Black life, anti-Blackness, racism, and other Ed&IS community concerns, and will be instrumental in envisioning, developing, implementing, and managing all aspects related to this work and the needs of Black students. The Assistant Dean will work collaboratively with all levels of Ed&IS to deliver EDI training programs, including, but not limited to, professional development, leadership training, cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution and mediation, and implicit bias, as well as staff engagement events that educate and raise awareness around anti-Blackness, racism and other EDI issues. The Assistant Dean will serve as an expert and organizational thought-leader for Ed&IS in the creation and execution of action plans, EDI benchmarks and best practices, and integrated solutions that will support an inclusive and respectful culture in Ed&IS.
TYPE OF SUPERVISION: Under the general direction of the Wasserman Dean and Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Dean functions independently within a wide range of duties that are very broad in scope. The majority of the work is self-generated by the incumbent who is expected to exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills and to proactively recommend to the Wasserman Dean, the Associate Dean for EDI, and Associate Dean for Administration, all matters and issues requiring attention.
DIRECTION SETTING & STRATEGIC PLANNING ? Provides strategic leadership in developing, implementing and assessing programs and initiatives that advance priorities addressing racism, anti-Blackness, and EDI values for all members of the Ed&IS community. ? Evaluates the effectiveness of EDI programs and activities, develops new initiatives based on feedback and data analysis, and makes changes to programs and initiatives to provide better service to organizational management, faculty, staff, and students. ? Advises the Wasserman Dean, Associate Dean of EDI, and Department Chairs on structures and practices for supporting faculty members to create more inclusive and antiracist classroom environments. ? Partners with the Associate Dean for EDI to administer assessments of school climate and anti-racism efforts; evaluates results, and partner with the School's Leadership Team to develop action plans to achieve a more inclusive and diverse School environment. The Assistant Dean will lead an annual Black student audit and make the findings and actions available for the school community at large. ? Partners with the Associate Dean for Administration and Human Resources Director to design EDI programs targeted to staff attraction and retention. ? In partnership with the Department Chairs, the Director of Student Services and student leaders, builds upon and institutionalizes student-led equity initiatives to continue to enhance student climate and connect student leaders across degree programs. ? Serves as key advisor around issues and initiatives regarding EDI, culture, and climate as they relate to students, faculty, staff, and other members of our community, and makes strategic recommendations to the Wasserman Dean, Associate Dean of EDI, Associate Dean for Administration, and Dean's Leadership Team regarding decisions on all EDI aspects of the School. ? Develops action plans, training materials, reports, correspondence and other program materials using various media in support of the goals of the Office of EDI. ? In consultation with the Wasserman Dean, the Associate Dean for EDI, and the Office of External Relations, collaborates and develops direct department communications strategy for articulating and communicating the department's vision and commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment through various publicity channels.
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION ? In consultation with the Wasserman Dean and Associate Dean of EDI, establishes operational and programmatic objectives and work plans, delegates assignments to supervised staff, responds to a variety of issues, and handles sensitive negotiations with little or no precedence, requiring expedient and diplomatic action within the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OEDI). ? Under the direction of the Associate Dean for EDI, and in consultation with Associate Dean for Administration, determines best allocation of financial, time, and human resources in planning events, activities, and initiatives for the OEDI. ? Works collaboratively with others to translate broad directions into concrete goals and accomplishments, moving agendas and initiatives forward with both sensitivity and tenacity. The incumbent must be prepared to work in the background or foreground as dictated by the situation at hand. ? Works in partnership with Chairs, Division Heads, Program Heads & Director of the Office of Student Services to infuse EDI, anti-racism and anti-Blackness into all programs and activities - including student academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student orientation, graduation and events, internships, career counseling, pedagogy, mentoring and other related programs - tracking progress towards these goals, and communicating progress to an engaged community. ? Oversees the strategy for increasing effectiveness of outreach strategies for prospective students, including developing and managing external relationships to expand the recruitment pipeline. ? Creates a strategic plan for recruiting, funding and retaining Black graduate students within each Ed&IS department and academic Divisions. ? Creates assessment systems, tracks results of new programs, and communicates those results; based on assessment results, recommends changes to programs' content, policies, and strategic goals accordingly. ? Represents the School to the campus community and relevant external constituencies, including the Black Bruin Resource Center and other schools of Ed&IS, in the area of EDI. ? Participates in monthly Ed&IS's EDI Committee, and represent Ed&IS and UCLA at various university and external meetings, events, conferences and community engagements. ? Gathers and effectively communicates on-campus resources available to assist units in meeting established diversity goals.
PLANNING /FACILITATING TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT ? Plans and facilitates training and educational programs within diversity and inclusion initiatives, conflict resolution and mediation. Actively engages in and supports professional and career development across Ed&IS around EDI issues. ? Develops and delivers workshops, trainings, and other professional development opportunities targeting Ed&IS community members. ? Supports, coaches, and empowers those who are less experienced in leading conversations about diversity and inclusion to build the School's internal capacity for equity minded leadership. ? In consultation with Ed&IS community members, develops programming around issues of EDI as they pertain to all populations within Ed&IS, including year-long events. ? Provides guidance and expertise to oversee diversity issues in faculty recruitment, staff and student recruitment, and encourage retention of diverse populations. ? Develops and coordinates EDI school-wide outreach strategies. Plan the School's presence at national diversity events and initiatives, actively participating to recruit underrepresented populations across employment spectrum. ? In consultation with the Associate Dean for EDI, create a state of Black Affairs meeting to discuss issues impacting the Black Ed&IS community. ? In consultation with the Associate Dean for EDI, propose new school-wide diversity programs, evaluate the needs of various stakeholders, set goals for diversity programs and monitor performance and effectiveness of progress. ? Leverages university and other resources for organizing diversity training and awareness opportunities across all communities within Ed&IS. ? Develops and supports on-going learning and professional development that supports equitable practices which ensure inclusive and individualized support for students and employees. ? Develops programs which encourage relevant, courageous and respectful campus dialogue and foster awareness and appreciation of the value of diversity and inclusion, and empowers individuals to take action in their respective roles. ? Develops and implements a variety of school-wide training to promote cultural understanding and competency and a climate of equity and inclusion across all Ed&IS communities. ? Teaches courses as needed around issues pertaining to equity, diversity, and inclusion. ? Oversees compliance of training for leadership, managers and supervisors around issues of EDI.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS ? Earned doctorate in Education or Information Studies, or other terminal degree, with a focus in EDI and Black life, or related area is required. ? 5+ years of professional background in diversity, equity and inclusion, including leadership and managerial experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS ? Proven ability to support and empower leaders who are less experienced in leading conversations about diversity and inclusion to build the School's capacity in equity leadership. ? Track record of program implementation, strategic planning, and managing across multiple important priorities. ? Advanced understanding of issues affecting historically underrepresented/underserved communities in all dimensions, including issues of disparities in educational background, class, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, age, sexuality, and immigration status. ? Demonstrated understanding of concepts and theories related to anti-racism, racial equity and critical race theory and how to operationalize those concepts and theories into multi-layered constituency activities and programming. ? Demonstrated and applied skill in conflict resolution and mediation. ? Research or industry expertise in the assessment and reporting of strategic goals focused on equity, diversity and inclusion. ? Strong training, facilitation and presentation skills for audiences of varying sizes and composition. ? Demonstrated skill in developing and writing clear, concise and logical action plans, training materials, reports, correspondence and other program materials using various media. ? Strong program and project management skills and success working cross-functionally to develop and implement programs and projects. ? Detail oriented and highly self-driven with ability to work independently and take initiative to enhance EDI efforts. ? Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; demonstrated effectiveness in building teams and collaborations; ability to adapt as needed. ? Demonstrated skills in problem identification and creative problem solving, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and analysis, organizational skills, emotional intelligence and cultural humility. ? Track record of strategic planning, change management, program implementation and evaluation, and managing across multiple important priorities. ? Ability to juggle competing priorities successfully with a high volume of work in a complex working environment. ? Highly developed diplomacy and influential and interpersonal skills to work effectively across the organization at all levels, including both direct reports and with cross functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting structure. ? Some travel and ability to work evenings and weekends in support of professional development and initiatives as needed. ? Demonstrated skills in research and teaching to contribute to the scholarship on anti-Blackness, equity, diversity and inclusion.
