Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the department of Medicine at the Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The laboratory is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician to assist with ongoing projects studying brain control of metabolism and using physiological study techniques such as euglycemic clamp techniques and brain infusions to assess whole body glucose and lipid homeostasis and inflammation in rodents. The laboratory is interested in studying a role of hypothalamic control of hepatic lipid and glucose metabolism and to dissect the role of the autonomic nervous system in brain control of metabolism and what goes wrong in obesity and diabetes. Prior experience in animal surgery (such as implanting catheters) and/or physiology would be welcome, but is not required, but needs to be willing to be trained in these procedures. The ideal applicant has the ambition to learn new research approaches and techniques and should be a great team player to participate in cutting edge research to better understand diabetes, obesity and the role that the brain plays in these conditions. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
May assign and instruct support personnel in various phases of technical analysis, experimentation and laboratory testing work, as may be required.
Implant's catheters in mice and rats, stereotactic surgery and infusion studies.
Oversees the preparation of culture media, reagents, stains and stock solutions.
Prepares tissues for histological sections and staining.
Maintains records, files and databases related to studies and experiments.
Keeps abreast of latest technology, methods and procedures related to research area.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associates Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years related experience in a laboratory environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Previous lead experience highly desirable.
Computer literacy desirable.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical Demands: Reading, standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Lifting up to 25 lbs. laboratory environment; exposure to study subjects in a clinical environment and exposure to research animal models.
Work Environment: Office environment with moderate noise. Must follow all safety precautions in laboratory, as required.
