The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full-time 3rd-5th grade Science teacher for the 2021 - 2022 to begin in August 2021.
The successful candidate will have a passion for working with lower school students in an innovative, supportive environment. The Lower School Science Teacher will report to the Director of Lower School - Elementary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching science to 3rd-5th grade students with a primary focus on environmental science.
Developing curricula and implementing lessons that incorporate a range of learning approaches to both support and challenge diverse learners to reach their fullest potential
Cultivating a love of learning
Keeping anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive reports
Collaborating with colleagues both intra- and cross-departmentally to share best practices and ensure student progress.
Attending faculty meetings and conferences as needed.
Maintaining consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.
Engaging in the wider life of the Lower School - for example, serving as a faculty advisor to a student club, coaching a sport or chaperoning trips.
Displaying a strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
Maintaining a high level of professionalism.
Passion for Science and interest for teaching and working with Lower School students
Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school with a focus on experiential and place based teaching and learning.
Appreciation for, and commitment to, diversity and social justice in multiple forms.
Demonstration of enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
Lower School teaching experience, preferably in a science.
