This is a full-time, 10-month position. Spanish will be taught with the two-part goal of exposing students to the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries around the world as well as developing a curiosity and enthusiasm for learning another language.
Organizational Relationships: The Spanish Teacher works cooperatively with Lead and Assistant Classroom Teachers and other staff members.
On an instructional level, the Spanish Teacher will:
Teach Spanish to children infants through 6th grade.
Establish and maintain a positive and supportive learning climate in the classroom.
Provide basic age-appropriate care and supervision of students.
Establish positive relationships with students characterized by warmth, mutual respect, fairness, joyful interaction, and goodwill.
Establish clear and reasonable expectations in the classroom, and manage student behavior effectively and consistently, providing appropriate disciplinary measures as needed.
Have thorough knowledge appropriate for teaching Spanish and stay abreast of recent developments.
Be familiar with and teach to the school’s articulated standards, benchmarks and curricula for the subject taught as well as for physical, emotional, social and academic development, when appropriate.
Design, plan and implement appropriate studies, projects, lessons and activities to teach articulated and emergent curricula.
Teach students using experiential and hands-on learning, capitalizing on students’ interests, and encouraging student thinking and motivation.
Use materials and resources consistent with the school’s Montessori pedagogy and curricula, including materials that invite creativity, and age-appropriate and multimodal manipulatives.
Adapt lessons and differentiate instruction as much as possible according to the learning paces and styles of individual students.
Have clearly defined objectives and goals for each student.
Periodically assess students’ learning using authentic assessments.
Evaluate students’ progress regularly and meet their individual needs, within reason, for extra support and/or enrichment.
Share progress, challenges and successes of students with Classroom Teachers and the Student Support Team when appropriate.
Participate in the Student Support Team and contribute to Individual Educational Plans when necessary.
Establish and maintain partnerships and communicate effectively with parents.
On a classroom organizational level, the Spanish teacher will:
Maintain an attractive, organized, clean classroom/instructional space that is age-appropriate and conducive to learning.
Manage the classroom budget for special activities and for the acquisition and maintenance of educational materials and supplies.
Utilize MRX for documenting students’ progress.
Write required student progress reports twice a year.
Conduct parent conferences and participate in classroom teacher/parent conferences when requested.
Write and distribute required parent communications, including Spanish Newsletters and contributions to Classroom Teachers’ weekly emails.
Meet all deadlines for submitting required work.
Contact parents directly and confer with Lead Classroom Teacher when an issue or concern arises about a student.
Utilize MRX for documenting communications with individual parents.
Arrange for a substitute teacher when not able to teach class.
Provide clear and complete lesson plans and class procedures for substitute teachers.
On a school-wide level, the Spanish Teacher will:
Support the mission, philosophy, pedagogy, policies and procedures of the school.
Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct in the classrooms and in the performance of general school duties.
Serve the school outside the classroom in a manner established by the school and consistent with the responsibilities of a professional educator.
Model integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity and respect for all persons as well as an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender diversity.
Collaborate with colleagues and the school’s leadership in the design and implementation of curriculum within the context of the school’s overall program and mission.
Work cooperatively and communicate directly with other teachers and staff members.
When questions or concerns arise, raise them with appropriate colleagues and supervisors.
Attend and participate in required school functions and special events.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and other occasional school-related meetings that may be scheduled either before or after regular school days or hours, unless other arrangements are made with the Assistant Head of School or Head of School.
Attend and participate in staff development days, and conference days.
Participate in 2 admission/retention events over the course of the year, dates and times to be determined.
Carry out extra-curricular duties such as recreation and car line as assigned by the Assistant Head of School or Department Coordinators.
Should teleworking become necessary, the Spanish Teacher will:
Be willing and able to perform all parts of this job description while working from home, on campus or a combination.
Be proficient or willing to become proficient in the technology needed to teach online and/or remotely.
Being permitted or required to work from home due at times to force majeure events does not alter the essential function of an employee’s job of working at school when possible.
To continue professional development, the Spanish Teacher will:
Initiate growth and change in own intellectual and professional development, seeking out and attending conferences, classes, workshops, seminars and other learning opportunities pertaining to your field as well as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Welcome supervision in the context of clearly defined and well-communicated criteria of evaluation.
Participate in required evaluation processes, including self-evaluations, formal observations, peer observations, and professional development.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a Bachelor’s or higher degree in education or a related field.
Must possess specialized knowledge of the Spanish language.
Must have at least 2 years or experience with children and/or adolescents, or experience in a classroom environment, or teaching role in an educational environment.
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and the public.
Must possess facility with a variety of technology platforms and tools and the ability to integrate them with the curriculum.
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
Must have an audible voice and adequate hearing and vision in order to supervise the students, both indoors and outdoors.
Must have sufficient mobility and the agility needed to interact with children.
Must have the physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and appropriate movement during lessons/activities is expected.
