The Associate Dean for Business Affairs is the Chief Aministrative Officer for the School of Medicine (SOM) and serves as a core member of School's leadership team, in addition to other cabinets and advisory groups to the Dean. The Associate Dean is a key strategic partner for the Dean, department chairs, faculty, and staff in the SOM for activities related to financial operations, resource management, and major initiatives that affect the School. Reporting directly to the Dean with a dotted line to the Health Sciences Chief Financial Officer, the Associate Dean for Business Affairs manages complex and sensitive issues on behalf of the Dean, including high-level financial analysis and planning, as well as management oversight across all 18+ department businesses offices.

The Associate Dean for Business Affairs requires analysis, evaluation, development, and reasoning across the broad School portfolio of Departments/ Divisions/ Units, programs, funding streams, and initiatives. The Associate Dean represents and acts on behalf of the Dean and possesses delegated authority on all budgetary matters within the SOM; establishes internal controls to assess and manage risk in areas such as budget and finance, department business management; serves as a member of the SOM Executive Cabinet; formulates and implements strategic, tactical, financial, and operational solutions to institution-wide issues; works closely with SOM academic and administrative leaders; works closely with senior staff to acquire and manage resources and infrastructure necessary to adequately support the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the School.
The Associate Dean leads the business and financial projects and initiatives in support of the School's broad educational, research, and clinical missions. The incumbent will represent the Dean and SOM, and will negotiate and act as a liaison with top administration and professionals in the exploration and discussion of initiatives and issues, and participate with other higher-level leaders to establish strategic business plans and objectives. Makes decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Reviews and approves recommendations for operational planning and control. As the chief administrative officer for the SOM Dean's Office, responsible and accountable engaging in strategic planning efforts across multiple dimensions within the Associate Dean's span of control and establishing collaborations and cohesiveness among its business leaders. This position will also serve as the SOM Principal Business Officer (PBO) to the Group on Business Affairs (GBA) of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). In this role, the Associate Dean will be the primary administrative point of contact for the AAMC GBA and PBOs from other SOMs in the AAMC.
This includes collaboration in joint institutional endeavors and also oversight of multiple annual survey completion, including the critical LCME Part I-A financial report. Also responsible for management of collateral or residual impacts to other parts of the organization, including partnerships with the administrative leaders of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS), Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science (HWSPH), UC San Diego Health, and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences Office (VCHS). This position partners with the SOM Chief of Staff (CoS), academic leaders, business officers, Health System leadership, other VCHS and Dean administrators, and campus leadership to support the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of division or the organization as a whole.
Ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level; to lead subordinate management to develop goals in alignment with mission. Proven ability to lead and execute departmental strategic planning processes and participate and provide valuable input related to strategic planning efforts.
