Bixby School is currently seeking a teacher to support student’s literacy development as an assistant to the Lead Literacy Teacher for 1st and 2nd grades, and as Lead Teacher for literacy skills classes (e.g. spelling, handwriting, cursive, keyboarding). This position is full-time (30+ hours per week) during the academic year (August 16, 2021-June 6, 2022). Students participate in a daily 90-minute Literacy class and may have periods throughout the week when they are working on individual skills practice (e.g. spelling, handwriting, keyboarding). Each class has approximately 10-16 students. The position will also serve as a substitute teacher in the event any teacher has an unplanned absence. The ideal candidate is energetic and creative with a driving desire to know and inspire each student.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
As directed by the Literacy teacher, support the delivery of classroom instruction to meet students’ needs and “fuel the embers” of individual student strengths, including:
Working with individual students to help them learn and practice specific skills (such as spelling)
Working with small groups to help them complete a task (such as a project)
Working with students who require additional support such as students with learning differences who may benefit from accommodations or those who are ready for extensions
Support the teacher as an extra ‘set of hands’ and an extra ‘set of eyes’ in the classroom
Assist with the day to day logistics of maintaining an effective classroom environment (e.g organizing materials, cleaning, directing, reinforcing instructions, and other general tasks)
Assist the lead teacher to develop resources, make adjustments to resources and ensure resources are ready for use
Assist with the cycle of monitoring, reviewing and planning to respond to student needs and support individual growth using authentic, mission aligned evidence (e.g. student work, photos/videos, student reflections, observations, etc.)
Deliver instruction in handwriting, cursive and keyboarding using the Learning Without Tears curriculum, as well as spelling for younger students
Student supervision for lunch, recess, morning group time and other school-wide events.
Build positive and effective relationships with teachers, students, colleagues, and families
Associate’s degree in education or related field, or equivalent experience
Experience working with student populations with diverse gifts and support needs
Current First Aid, CPR, and Universal Precautions, or willingness to become certified quickly
Enjoys spending time and engaging with young children and other educators
