This position entails teaching a full complement of middle school science. The science curriculum includes middle-level earth science, life science, chemistry and physical science. Teaching is in a single-gender environment.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Create daily lesson plans and learning activities for students based on national, local and school standards in science education and research and knowledge of developmental behaviors.
Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
Deliver high-quality, engaging, balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
Evaluate student performance on tasks established by the standards using different methods such as observation, performance-based tasks or other standard test practices.
Collaborate in the development of a vertically aligned science curriculum across Learning Communities.
Build and maintain positive relationships with students and instructional colleagues.
Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress, potential and behavior periodically through phone or electronic means and at parent and teacher conferences.
Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
The ideal candidate would have a passion for teaching deep thinking and problem-solving skills, a strong knowledge of best practices of instruction, hands-on science and working with adolescents. The Middle School Science Teacher position requires an educator who can tailor instruction to individuals’ needs, evaluate student progress and provide feedback in a timely manner, promote individual growth and independent thought, and create a positive learning environment. A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of Sacred Heart Schools is essential.
Basic requirements include but are not limited to:
Bachelor’s or higher in science, with a current teaching certificate
A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at the middle school level
A desire to seek out professional development activities related to the latest instructional strategies, student growth and best pedagogical practices.
Ability to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Sacred Heart community
Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute ideas to enhance the respective academic programs
